MEJCON-SA: Statement on the murder of KZN activist, Fikile Ntshangase

The Mining and Environmental Justice Community Network of South Africa (MEJCON-SA) is deeply saddened and enraged by the cruel and unjust killing of Mama Fikile Ntshangase, a member of the Mfolozi Community Environmental Justice Organisation. Mama Ntshangase has, for the longest time, been fiercely fighting the environmental and social injustices caused by the Tendele Coal Mine against her community.

It is unfortunate that Mama Ntshangase joins a long list of activists who had to pay with their lives for merely seeking a better life for herself and her community. The violence and killings of community activists is a well-known trend used by big spineless corporates as a means to scare and silence the voices of those who speak against the continued violation of people’s Constitutional rights.

Mama Ntshangase’s death will definitely not be in vain. MEJCON will honor Mama by continuing the fight against these corporates in their own respective communities.

We send our heartfelt condolences to Mama Ntshangase’s family, friends, and comrades.

Sithi lala ngoxolo Mgazi.
